The modern era of music has seen a decline in rock and grunge music genre leading to a decrease in teenage rebellion that was reestablished in the 1990’s. The idea of teenage rebellion has slowly decreased in recent years compared to the 1950s and the 1990’s. (SCHED, 2015). The decrease is a result of more rights for teenagers and lower set expectation than those in the post war period. In today’s society teenagers are not using songs as their rebellion anthems as they did in the 1990’s. Teenagers in current day are increasingly turning their nose up at drug and alcohol with consumption being the lowest it has ever been (Easton. M, 2012). This is a result of changing attitudes as teenager are not feeling the need to express themselves though wild behavior. The attitudes are also changing due to the increase in education levels in teenagers on the effects of drug and alcohol consumption. Also changing is the type of music, with the introduction of electronic dance music, growing in popularity and becoming a recognized genre. This genre is the result of collaborations of electronic dance music artists or DJ’s with pop artists introducing it to the mainstream industry. Electronic Dance Music is becoming a mainstream style of music and has reached an unpresented level of popularity (The Huffington, 2013). The music has both a positive and negative impact on people, some individuals unable to understand why some enjoy it as the genre is seen as just noise. (The Atlantic, 2012). Lyrics of the modern era have also become more sexual and have subtle references. This is illustrated in Jason Derulo song Trumpets, “Every time you that you get undressed- I hear symphonies in my head” (Desrouleaux J and Bellion J, 2014, “Trumpets”). The sexual connotations in this song are deemed normal in modern day society compared to the 1950’s where the lyrics would be considered disgraceful and evil. These lyrics are seen as normal in today’s society as most popular songs contain similar lyrics and references. Songs in the modern era also have references to drugs use or drug names to express a point. This can be seen in Ed Sheeran song A-Team, “She’s in the class A team- stuck in her daydream” (Sheeran. E, 2011). The artist in the song is making a subtle reference to the drug cocaine. The reference is not seen as outrageous or shocking as it is similar to many lyrics of currents songs in the charts. The modern era has seen a dull in music expressing teenage rebellion, with music conveying drug references and explicates considered normal.
